Antigo Prepares for World's Largest Airfield Rubblization Project

The largest ever airfield rubblization and HMA overlay project is underway at King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The client is General Authority of Civil Aviation and the prime contractor is Almabani General Contractors of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This 902,910,845 Saudi Riyals (around $241 million) project is second only to the Kandahar-Herat Highway project in Afghanistan (2.9 million square meters) in terms of total area rubblized.

Two runways and associated taxiways and aprons totaling 1.3 million square meters will be rubblized by Antigo Construction by taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the MHB Badger Breaker® and 8600 Badger Breaker®. The existing jointed, plain concrete pavement is 300 mm to 430 mm thick with the majority being 370 mm. The thicker concrete will be broken first with the 7.5-ton, guillotine-style hammer of the 8600 Badger Breaker® followed by the 16-hammer MHB Badger Breaker® to complete the rubblization. The thinner concrete will be rubblized using only the MHB Badger Breaker®. A grid roller will then be used to further pulverize the concrete particles at the surface and begin the compaction and seating process. Final compaction and seating will be accomplished with a pneumatic-tire roller and a vibratory smooth drum roller.

Rubblization is scheduled to begin in June of 2008 and will continue on and off well into 2009 due to the phasing of this project. The Central Runway will be reconstructed and reopened before the West Runway is reconstructed allowing two of three runways to remain in service at all times. More information can be found at Almabani's project website: http://www.almabani.com.sa/P2007_6.html.

The success of Antigo's previous large airfield rubblization projects at Grand Forks Air Base and Selfridge ANG Base in the United States and at San Juan International Airport in Puerto Rico set the groundwork for a mega-project like KAIA.
