Antigo Rubblizes Quarter Million Square Yards of Runway
By once again taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the MHB Badger Breaker® and 8600 Badger Breaker®, Antigo Construction, Inc. has successfully rubblized the runway at the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. Antigo rubblized 247,000 square yards of concrete runway in 25 days as a subcontractor to Strata Corporation. The majority of the pavement was 19" thick, nonreinforced concrete. The touchdown areas at both ends of the runway were 24" thick. The rubblizing specification required that a minimum of 75% of the broken concrete particles not exceed 3" at the surface, 9" in the top half of the pavement, and 15" in the bottom half of the pavement. Antigo met this specification by first breaking the concrete with the 6-ton, guillotine-style hammer of the 8600 Badger Breaker® and then completed the concrete breaking using the 16-hammer MHB Badger Breaker®. A grid roller was then used to further pulverize the concrete particles at the surface and begin the compaction process. Final compaction and seating was accomplished with a 25-ton pneumatic-tire roller. The typical pavement overlay consisted of a variable depth layer of crushed aggregate base course for crown adjustment and 9 inches of hot mix asphalt. 1,000 feet on each end was overlaid with 16 inches of concrete.
The Grand Forks project was Antigo's second large air base runway rubblization project. The success of this project and of the Selfridge ANG Base project in 2002 has demonstrated that the concrete rubblization and overlay option is an excellent choice for airport runways.
