In May, 2002 Antigo successfully rubblized the main runway at Selfridge ANG Base near Detroit. Antigo rubblized 95,000 square yards of concrete runway in 16 days as a subcontractor to Dan's Excavating, Inc. The majority of the pavement was a 10" thick layer of nonreinforced concrete over an 11" thick layer of nonreinforced concrete. The remainder of the pavement sections were single layer, nonreinforced concrete of 19", 16" and 13" thickness. The rubblizing specification required that a minimum of 75% of the broken concrete particles not exceed 3" at the surface, 9" in the top half of the pavement, and 15" in the bottom half of the pavement. Antigo met this specification by first breaking the concrete with the 6-ton, guillotine-style hammer of the 8600 Badger Breaker® and then completed the concrete breaking using the 16-hammer MHB Badger Breaker®. A grid roller was then used to further pulverize the concrete particles at the surface and begin the compaction process. Final compaction and seating was accomplished with a 25-ton pneumatic-tire roller. The pavement overlay consisted of a nominal 4.5" layer of crushed aggregate base course and 7 inches of hot mix asphalt.
