Use of Antigo Breakers Ltd. as BAA's preferred supplier.
BAA recently launched research and development project investigating the use of Crack & Seat on airfield pavements at Heathrow. This project involved trial crack and seat areas, that were then monitored under live aircraft loadings. The successful completion of this research and development has now led to the commencement of substantial reconstruction using Crack & Seat techniques on the Southern Taxiways at Heathrow. The first phase of this reconstruction commenced in May 2004.
As part of the research and development project the team investigated who would be best placed to offer the level of crack control required to produce accurate and meaningful results from the trials. Antigo Breakers Ltd were selected due to their experience both in the UK and USA, and also the quality of their plant.
Antigo Breakers Ltd during both the research & development project and also the first phase of the Crack & Seat reconstruction project has offered an excellent level of service. Their proactive approach, level of control and quality is excellent.
BAA operates in an extremely demanding & often frustrating security environment, Antigo have coped well with this and have been proactive in ensuring they are able to work, when other lesser suppliers might have failed.

HOWELL ASPHALT COMPANY

Howell Asphalt Company has completed four concrete rubblization and HMA overlay projects. We hired Antigo Construction, Inc. to perform the rubblization on these projects. The first project was in 1996 on I-57 in Effingham County. Antigo operated their MHB Badger Breaker® for the first time in Illinois rubblizing 5 lane miles. The Illinois Department of Transportation was very interested in seeing this new technology at work. In fact, the Secretary himself visited the site to get a first hand look at the asphalt milling, concrete rubblizing and asphalt paving all occurring at the same time. The success of this project helped convince IDOT that concrete rubblization and HMA overlay is an excellent solution for concrete pavements that have reached the end of their service lives. We worked with Antigo again in 1997 on I-70 in Cumberland County where they rubblized 6 lanes miles. Once again the rubblization and HMA overlay went very well and further convinced IDOT of the feasibility of the process. Both of these pavements have performed very well.
The experience gained on these early projects helped prepare us for the largest concrete rubblization and HMA overlay job in Illinois history. Howell Asphalt Company and Champaign Asphalt Company formed a joint venture for the I-70, Clark County project constructed during 2002 and 2003. We paved 550,000 tons asphalt with an aggressive schedule that required us to lay a minimum of 6,000 tons per day. It was crucial that the concrete rubblization work met our schedule as this work necessarily preceded our paving operations. Antigo rubblized the eastbound lanes in late March of 2003 using 3 MHBs in order to complete 19 lane miles in only 7 days. We completed the paving and reopened the eastbound lanes on June 2nd, 26 days ahead of schedule. Antigo repeated their excellent production on the westbound lanes in mid-July again using 3 MHBs to rubblize 19 lanes miles in 7 days. This final stage was opened to traffic on September 8th, 43 days ahead of schedule. By all accounts this project was a great success for all involved. Antigo's experienced operators, excellent equipment and company philosophy of doing the job well and on time were major contributors to the success of this high profile project.
We also worked with Antigo on a much different concrete rubblization and HMA overlay project in 2003. CH 4 in Moultrie County is a 2-lane rural road. A 6,500 foot long segment was rubblized and overlaid in two days. Antigo rubblized and we overlaid one lane each day while maintaining traffic. Though this project was small in comparison to the interstate projects, it is an example of the wide range of roads that are good candidates for concrete rubblization and HMA overlay.
We look forward to working with Antigo on more projects, large and small, in the future. We would highly recommend Antigo to any owner or contractor who needs concrete pavement rubblized, cracked and seated, or broken for removal.

Recently I was speaking to some people from your office regarding quotes on some INDOT projects. Some of the conversation turned to the project our Companies did in 2001 on I-64 in Louisville, Kentucky. I just wanted to thank you again for the excellent job you did breaking pavement for removal and the crack and seat for overlay.
The I-64 project was a unique job with total road closure for 8 consecutive weekends. We could begin work at 9:00 pm, Friday nights and had to reopen both directions at 6:00 am, Monday. Trying to compress a $20 million, 3 mile, interstate rehab project into 8 weekends required a great deal of advance planning and commitment from subcontractors. To get a good jump on the digout areas, we needed pavement breakers at multiple locations to begin precisely at 9:00 pm, Fridays. As I recall, you supplied four machines and kept a fifth in the storage yard in case of breakdown. This allowed each machine to do 2 digout areas at the bridge and had us removing pavement by 11 :00 pm, Fridays. After the digout breaking was complete, some of the breakers then moved to start on the crack and seat areas and stayed well in front of the asphalt overlay crews.
When we were bidding the project, we planned the extraordinary effort that the subcontractors would have to display and found that yours was the only company that had the capabilities to supply the personnel and equipment required. This really become apparent when the early weekend work went smoothly to set the rapid schedule off to a good start.

Independence Recycling has subcontracted Antigo Construction, Inc. to break concrete pavement on 21 projects since 1986. At last count, the total amount of concrete broken for us by Antigo exceeds 1,500,000 square yards. A large portion of this concrete was thick airport runways on projects with very tight schedules. Antigo has always started on time, met or exceeded project schedules, and produced the size of broken concrete pieces we required for our concrete crushing operation. The Badger Breakers® that Antigo operates are high production, low maintenance machines that are able to effectively break concrete of all types and thicknesses. Independence Recycling has been very satisfied with the work Antigo has performed for us and we look forward to working together on many more successful projects in the future.

Reference: K-00035, Ohio Dept. of Transportation Project No. 3002-00
I.R. 271, Medina County, Ohio, Major Reconstruction
Through Project No. 3002-00, the Ohio Department of Transportation sought to reconstruct approximately eight miles of interstate highway. This project employed a variety of innovative construction and project delivery techniques. They included Design Build Construction, Buildable Unit Phased Plan Submission, Pavement Rubblization and Pavement Warranties.
As one of our subcontractors, Antigo Construction played a vital role in the success of this project. As is the case with many highway reconstruction projects in the state of Ohio, there was considerable concern related to the stability of the subgrade beneath this pavement. Testing revealed that CBR values of 3 and 4 were common throughout the eight mile stretch of highway. The rubblization process was adjusted to achieve the required break pattern over these suspect subgrades, with only a limited amount of sub grade correction required. The rubblized pavement provided a strong and stable foundation on which to build the asphalt pavement. Our early concerns related to placement of a "Warranty Pavement" over a rubblized pavement proved to be unfounded.
During this project, Antigo Construction responded to our aggressive schedule with two of its Badger Breaker units and rubblized 341,000 square yards of concrete pavement at a rate of 16,000 square yards per day. We further utilized the breaker units to break an additional 36,000 square yards of pavement to a 24"-minus size to expedite required pavement removal.
We found Antigo Construction to be competent and responsive to the aggressive demands of this project. Kenmore Construction Co., Inc. looks forward to our next opportunity to collaborate with Antigo Construction.

As second-tier subcontractor to Independence Recycling, your company recently participated in the demolition of runway 18R-36L and associated taxiway's as part of our plan to totally reconstruct the west runway complex here at Memphis International.
We have been engaged in major construction projects, including some significant demolition work, for the past decade. Because of that experience we thought we had pretty good knowledge of time and effort needed to break up the old runway. You proved us wrong.
We have come to expect that demolition equipment, particularly drop plates, will operate for a few hours and then spend a few hours down for repairs. Your crews moved in with equipment that did not break down. You sent 4 machines, and you provided full mechanical and service support. Your crews worked early and late, in all weather conditions, breaking up the old pavement at a far faster rate than our most optimistic projections.
On behalf of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, please accept our congratulations and thanks for a job well done. We are very pleased and impressed with your efforts.

Antigo Construction, Inc. has performed concrete pavement breaking as a subcontractor for Northern Improvement Company on 21 projects since 1990. A total of over 1,850,000 square yards of pavement have been broken on airport and interstate highway reconstruction projects during this time. Antigo has been able to provide the appropriate type of machine to effectively break the various types and thickness' of pavement encountered on these projects. Their ability to break continuously reinforced concrete pavement in a manner that has facilitated the efficient removal of the reinforcing steel has been an important factor in maintaining project schedules. In addition, Antigo has consistently worked with us to provide the required number of machines and skilled operators needed to match the varying production requirements on different projects.
Northern Improvement Company has been very satisfied with the service that Antigo Construction, Inc. has provided for us and we look forward to working together on future projects.

Based upon our experience as a prime contractor and working with you as our concrete breaking subcontractor on the Murray Pacific Project, we know Antigos Badger Guillotine Concrete Breakers are capable of breaking reinforced concrete slabs with thickness in excess of 24.
The concrete slabs on the Murray Pacific Project were described as 12 to 13 non-reinforced concrete. The actual concrete thickness encountered is as follows:
Less than 18 thick 5,254 Square Yards
18 - 24 Thick 6,689 Square Yards (with the majority being 20)
30 - 36 Thick 1,105 Square Yards
The majority of the thick slabs, 18 - 36, were reinforced with either mesh or rebar. When the rebar reinforced concrete was encountered, it consisted of a double mat.
Even under these difficult conditions, the Badger Guillotine Concrete Breaker proved to be a very reliable piece of equipment;less than two hours of down time was experienced on this project.
Antigo Construction completed all the concrete breaking on this project in seven working days. Antigos experience and work ethics were tremendously helpful to RCI in completing this phase of the project ahead of schedule.

KIEWIT WESTERN CO.
|
|
|
Kiewit Western Co. began a project at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska in the Spring of 1994. We had a very tight schedule to upgrade the airfield and re-open the runway. Antigo Construction arrived with three of their guillotine breakers and broke 61,000 square yards of concrete, which varied in thickness between 17 inches and 21 inches. They arrived on the exact date our schedule required them to begin, and they completed the concrete breaking 3 days ahead of the nine days allotted on our schedule.
Two months later, the Air Force and the Corps of Engineers added an additional 8,000 square yards of pavement replacement. Antigo Construction promptly arranged for a guillotine breaker to move to our project at Offutt to complete the breaking required on this added work, allowing Kiewit to stay on schedule and still open this critical runway on time.
We highly recommend Antigo Construction Co. to do the concrete breaking on any project of any size. They have the people, the equipment, and the expertise to meet any challenge or any schedule.

We were extremely impressed with your machines and breaking operations on the first job your Company did for us at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in 1989. Your machines broke the two layer concrete with asphalt bond breaker approximately 17 inches thick in a single pass. Some areas were thicker, over 21 inches. The depth of the concrete breaking did not pose a problem for your machines. Routine maintenance, greasing and occasionally adjusting the cable was the only down time. This project had large liquidated damages which was a major concern. However, your operation went so well we were able to get ahead of schedule and thus finished ahead of schedule. Because of the 1989 project we had no hesitations giving your Company another challenge on the 1991 project at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, a larger project than 1989.
The 1991 project had heavy liquidated damages since the Airfield would be shut down. Again you out performed our demands and stayed well ahead of our removal operation with pavement thickness of 17 with some 21 plus pavement. We again finished ahead of schedule with thanks to your efficient operation helping us get ahead in the beginning. Again your essentially maintenance free operation proved a value to this project.

JAMES JULIAN, INC.

James Julian, Inc. has been very satisfied with Antigo Construction, Inc. when it comes to concrete breaking of many types. Antigo has completed several projects for us in a prompt and effective manner. The first project we subcontracted Antigo on was the I-495 reconstruction project in Wilmington, Delaware during 1993-95. Antigo broke over 150,000 square yards of 10 thick, continuously reinforced, concrete pavement. Antigos guillotine drop hammers broke the existing pavement by hitting every 6 inches thus allowing us to remove the clean rebar from the broken concrete. Antigo also broke 12,000 square yards of 10 thick, mesh reinforced, concrete pavement to a 24 minus size to meet our needs. Antigo mobilized several times and always met our schedule.
Antigo performed various concrete breaking and rubblizing for us on our SR-11, Perry County, Pennsylvania project during 1993-95. Antigo broke 76,000 square yards of 10 thick, mesh reinforced, concrete pavement (half of 24 minus size, half to 12 minus size); 1,600 square yards of bridge approaches; 2,000 square yards of 4 wide centerline curb; and rubblized 12,000 square yards of 10 thick, mesh reinforced pavement. This project demonstrated Antigos versatility and flexibility to get the job done to the contractors satisfaction. Their guillotines performed the various breaking that was required, and when we needed help with the rubblizing portion of the job, they brought in their Multiple Hammer Breaker (MHB) and successfully rubblized pavement that the sonic breaker was unable to rubblize due to operational constraints.
Antigo is currently scheduled to complete their second phase of work on our US-202, Chester County, Pennsylvania project. Here they are breaking 30,000 square yards of 10 thick, mesh reinforced, concrete pavement to an 8 minus size to meet our specific needs on this project.
In conclusion, James Julian, Inc. can highly recommend Antigo Construction to perform the wide range of concrete breaking encountered on todays projects. They bring experience and are able to adapt to any situation. Their machinery is specialized, reliable, and effective. We look forward to working with Antigo on future projects.
